Land Rover Shows One-Off “Paul Smith” Designer Defender 90

Seems like the marketing folks at auto companies just cant get enough of cross pollination with fashion designers or apparel makers. From the granddaddy of the all, the Eddie Bauer Explorer, to Columbia Sportswear Jeeps, to less well know collaborations like Gucci AMC Hornets, the formula seemingly never gets old.

The Brits are never far behind and here’s Land Rover’s latest take with a designer Defender from Paul Smith. Don’t expect a Raptor with a cocky accent as this thing is mostly a 27 (!) hue paint treatment, wheels and a leathered up interior. Although the David Smith brand is dwarfed by other bigger apparel names, he is well known as a designer of men’s casual clothing and evidently a huge Defender fan.

Starting with a stock, out of the box Defender 90 and then adding the aforementioned paint job, he adds satin black 16-inch alloys and Paul Smith emblems festooned about the bodywork. The black plastic interior is swathed in multi-colored leather seats, blue seat belts, and a designer clock of all things.

Mechanically, the rig is bone-stock with a 2.2-liter four-cylinder making a whopping 130 horsepower, a relatively beefy 274 lb-ft of torque, and a six-speed manual transmission. Overall, the Defender has the goods to go mudding with the best of ‘em while keeping up with the hipsters hanging out in front of the club.

Whether this remains just a styling exercise remains to been seen. Land Rover has not announced what the future holds for this colorful Defender. However, Paul Smith is an avid Defender enthusiast so maybe the truck will find a spot in his garage as an added perk.
